OCTOBER RECAP: TRICK OR TREAT?
It’s October 31st. Which means two things:
1) It’s Halloween. The day everyone dresses up as their favorite celebrity or a “sexy ____” (insert public service job like a nurse, firefighter, or police)
2) It's the end of October (aka another month in the crypto books)
So it’s only right we bring you the best of the month the Milky Way. By giving you a recap of the winners & losers in a special edition we're calling Trick or Treat.
Let's start with the Winners - the ones that got all the treats.
1/ Reddit NFTs
Earlier this year, Reddit introduced Digital Avatars (aka NFTs).
This month, they exploded like some Pop Rocks in your mouth.
Reddit NFTs saw $9m+ in sales volume (~10x increase from September) and reached a $100m+ market cap.
Many doubted Reddit NFTs could be successful. But since the launch, 3m+ wallets have been created and Reddit users love NFTs now.
Turns out all you need to do is call them digital collectibles instead.
2/ Ethereum
Ethereum just completed its first full month since the Merge. And it was as sweet as a SweeTart.
- ETH jumped 20% in October
- ETH supply decreased by 7k ETH (~$11m). Under Proof-of-Work, ETH supply would have increased by 356k ETH (~$576m)
On top of that, the number of smart contracts on Ethereum is at a 16-month high and people are using the Ethereum blockchain to do things like fight cancer and sell houses.
3/ Dogecoin
October was huge for Dogecoin.
The price is up 100% on the month and it's quickly gone from everyone's favorite meme coin to the 8th largest cryptocurrency by market cap.
So, why the sudden pump? Elon Musk is now the "Chief Twit". And he loves some Dogecoin:
- Floated the idea of Doge being the payment method for Twitter subscriptions
- Leaked text messages revealed Elon and Jack Dorsey talking about a decentralized social network where users pay a small fee (possibly in Doge) for each message
This is big because Dogecoin could add 200m+ new users just from being integrated into Twitter.
4/ Binance
Binance had a weird month. It was kinda like eating Sour Patch Kids - at first, it's sour then it's sweet.
The sour start: Binance's blockchain, BSC, was exploited for $570m. Luckily, the hacker was only able to get away with ~$100m.
The sweet end: Binance's stablecoin (BUSD) is on the rise and CZ (Binance's CEO) is now best friends with Elon Musk.
- BUSD now has 15.5% market share and a $21b market cap
- Binance successfully lent $500m to Elon for the Twitter deal and will work with Twitter to integrate new crypto features
And now onto the losers of the month - the ones that got tricked.
1/ De-Fi protocols that got hacked
Pop Quiz: What haunts DeFi protocols the most?
Hint: It's not Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger.
It's crypto hackers.
And it was the worst month for hacks in the history of crypto. Over $800m was stolen in October Hacktober.
Here are some of the biggest ones:
- Transit Swap was hacked for $21m due to a bug-exploit
- Team Finance was hacked for $15m. It was supposed to be “safeguarding” funds for 4 projects. Whoopsy-daisies
And the second loser of the month...
2/ Core Scientific
Core Scientific is the biggest Bitcoin mining company in the world. And it looks like they're about to go bankrupt.
Core Scientific is spending more money on resources to mine than the actual BTC they get as a reward from mining. This has forced them to sell off most of their holdings.
At their peak, they had ~9600 BTC in the reserves. Now, they only have 24 BTC left.
Core Scientifics BTC holdings went from a King Size Reeses Cup to a single Reeses Piece.
