Telegram CEO Pavel Durov announced Wednesday that, starting next month, the popular messaging platform will open up monetization for its broadcast channels. The new monetization scheme will allow content creators to earn revenue shares.

In a post on his channel, Durov said channel owners can claim 50% of ad earnings generated from their content being displayed to viewers. The other half will accrue to Telegram.

Key Highlights:

  • Channels collectively see 1 trillion views monthly.
  • Only 10% is currently monetized through Telegram ads.
  • Revenue sharing model to take effect in March.
  • Payouts exclusively via the TON blockchain and Toncoin

The expanding monetization push aims to convert Telegram’s vast viewership on public channels—spanning 1 trillion impressions monthly into financial rewards for those driving that demand.

Toncoin surges following announcement

Durov notes that, presently, only 10% see any form of advertising. The new model will greatly expand the monetized ratio to compensate popular creators who contribute content.

“In March, the Telegram Ad Platform will officially open to all advertisers in nearly a hundred new countries,” Durove mentioned in his post.

Market Response:

  • Toncoin price surges 23% on news to $2.67.
  • TON serving as secure payments rail for model
  • The ad platform will be open to almost 100 countries.

The confirmation that Telegram has selected TON for payments unsurprisingly sparked an enthusiastic Toncoin rally exceeding 23% following the announcement.

TON surged from a 24-hour low of $2.14 to a high of $2.93 before dropping to its current price of $2.65. CoinMarketCap data shows that the trading volume has spiked by over 270%.

The usage of TON for payouts will help in driving up the utility of the coin. Users can also use the coins to reinvest in their channels to upgrade or promote them.
