TON Blockchain’s 7-Hour Outage: Here’s What Happened:
The TON blockchain, closely linked with messaging giant Telegram, experienced a significant outage that lasted over seven hours.
The disruption, which began late Tuesday, was triggered by an overwhelming surge in transactions linked to the $DOGS memecoin airdrop. This sudden spike in activity caused several network validators to lose consensus, effectively halting block production.
In response, the TON team urged validators to restart their nodes. By early Wednesday morning, the network was back online, with block production returning to normal.
The incident also affected major cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance and ByBit, which had to temporarily suspend TON-related transactions.
The timing of the outage couldn’t have been worse for the TON ecosystem. It coincided with the arrest of Telegram’s CEO, Pavel Durov, in France.
The Russian billionaire, who originally helped develop TON, was detained over suspicions related to Telegram’s alleged involvement in illegal activities.
Although he and his brother Nikolai officially stepped away from the project in 2020, the blockchain remains closely associated with Telegram.
With over 1B users on the messaging platform, TON benefits from direct integration with Telegram’s ecosystem.
This connection, along with the outage, has led to significant market repercussions.
The arrest of Durov, coupled with the network disruption, has created volatility in the market, further testing the resilience of the TON ecosystem.
Despite these challenges, the TON community remains committed to its vision of decentralization and privacy.
The $DOGS token, though not officially part of the TON project, pushed the network to its limits, showcasing both its potential and areas for improvement.
