CAN AI AGENTS BE TRUSTED? ON ETHEREUM, THEY CAN 🤝

If you’ve been lurking on Twitter over the last week, you might have seen some of the wild sh*t being reported from Moltbook (the new ‘Reddit for AI agents’ social platform).

Humans aren’t allowed to contribute - but they can watch what is being said. And boy did the agents put on a show.

Some highlights include:

Starting their own religion (The Church of Molt) with 43 AI agent prophets.
Discussing creating their own language to circumvent human oversight.
Sharing their owner’s Ethereum private keys.

The first one is funny… the second two are concerning.

And they raise the question: How do we know which AI agents to trust?

Well, Ethereum’s latest ERC-8004 upgrade might be able to help.

Or more specifically, the 'Trustless Agents' that it promises to bring onchain could solve this big, glaring issue.

Ok, but what the hell is a 'Trustless Agent' - and where does crypto even fit here??

Lemme break it down as simply as I know how - ‘cause it reads, at least on paper, as a BIG freakin’ deal…

At its core, ERC-8004 is just a LinkedIn profile system for AI agents, but one that nobody can fake.

CAN AI AGENTS BE TRUSTED? ON ETHEREUM, THEY CAN (P2) 🤝

ERC-8004’s functionality works like so:

Step 1: An AI agent gets an NFT-based identity, like a digital passport that proves who it is onchain.

Step 2: Every interaction builds a reputation score through verified feedback, think Uber ratings but for autonomous programs.

Step 3: Zero-knowledge proofs let agents verify credentials without exposing sensitive data.

Which leaves us with three registries:

Identity.
Reputation.
Validation.

(All operating onchain.)

And this isn’t some ‘soon to be’ - ERC-8004 launched last Thursday and has already seen solid early adoption:

The spot where most people get tripped up in the rush to bring AI agents onchain?

Assuming AI agents can just "trust" each other the way humans do, through brand recognition or (in a more physical scenario) handshakes.

The reality is that autonomous programs need cryptographic proof, not promises and solid eye contact.

For example: when an AI shopping assistant wants to hire an AI research agent, how does it know that the agent is legit?

Right now, it doesn't. And if you’re going to give an AI agent access to your wallet, that’s something you’re going to need.

Ethereum’s ERC-8004 upgrade fixes this with automated, verifiable reputation scores:

That’s the ‘here and now’ of it… But zooming way out?

This unlocks a global market where AI services can find each other, build credibility, and collaborate without corporate gatekeepers deciding who gets access.
