City of Lugano Now Accepts Bitcoin and Tether for Tax Payments
The Swiss city of Lugano is expanding cryptocurrency integration by enabling residents to pay any municipal bill or tax invoice using Bitcoin (BTC) or Tether (USDT) stablecoins through a new streamlined process.

The new initiative announced Tuesday builds on Lugano’s move to accept Bitcoin and stablecoin Tether for payments on its web portal. In addition, the city’s latest innovation applies to all invoices, regardless of amount or service, embracing categories like tax bills.

Lugano cements itself as a progressive city
By accepting two mainstream cryptocurrencies for full settlement of public expenses alongside traditional options, Lugano cements itself as one of Switzerland’s most crypto-progressive urban centers.
The expansion aligns with Lugano’s collaboration with Tether, dubbed “Plan B.” The plan is in an effort to utilize Bitcoin’s technological infrastructure across aspects of municipal finance and daily routines.
Swiss crypto firm Bitcoin Suisse aided the integration by providing the back-end payment solution. Additionally, using any standard crypto wallet, citizens need only scan a Swiss QR code on invoices and select the desired coin for seamless payment.

Bitcoin Suisse Chief Product Officer Armin Schmid praised Lugano for accelerating practical Bitcoin adoption and setting an example of crypto assimilation other Swiss cities can follow.
“It is great to see that more and more Swiss municipalities are offering payments in cryptocurrencies as an option available to both citizens and companies, complementing traditional payment methods such as post-office counters and e-banking platforms.ā

Lugano continues to implement practical crypto utilities to become one of the first cities to accept Bitcoin and Tether.
