The Swiss city of Lugano is expanding cryptocurrency integration by enabling residents to pay any municipal bill or tax invoice using Bitcoin (BTC) or Tether (USDT) stablecoins through a new streamlined process.

Key Highlights:

  • Lugano is integrating crypto further into daily life after its adoption
  • Citizens can now pay all city taxes and service fees with Bitcoin, Tether
  • Part of the “Plan B” partnership with Tether to transform finances via crypto

Lugano cements itself as a progressive city

By accepting two mainstream cryptocurrencies for full settlement of public expenses alongside traditional options, Lugano cements itself as one of Switzerland’s most crypto-progressive urban centers.

The expansion aligns with Lugano’s collaboration with Tether, dubbed “Plan B.” The plan is in an effort to utilize Bitcoin’s technological infrastructure across aspects of municipal finance and daily routines.

Swiss crypto firm Bitcoin Suisse aided the integration by providing the back-end payment solution. Additionally, using any standard crypto wallet, citizens need only scan a Swiss QR code on invoices and select the desired coin for seamless payment.

Bitcoin Suisse Chief Product Officer Armin Schmid praised Lugano for accelerating practical Bitcoin adoption and setting an example of crypto assimilation other Swiss cities can follow.

“It is great to see that more and more Swiss municipalities are offering payments in cryptocurrencies as an option available to both citizens and companies, complementing traditional payment methods such as post-office counters and e-banking platforms.”

Schmid said

Lugano continues to implement practical crypto utilities to become one of the first cities to accept Bitcoin and Tether.
