In a recent blog post on his 30th birthday, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin highlighted some of the major shifts he has witnessed in the cryptocurrency community since first becoming involved over a decade ago.

As one of the most prominent figures in the crypto industry, Buterinā€™s reflections offer valuable insights into how the industry and its ideals have developed.

Key highlights include:

  • The rise of a new generation of young leaders driving cutting-edge projects in crypto and other fields
  • The fall of previous crypto luminaries in scandals left Buterin without older role models to follow.
  • His vision for a more holistic, decentralized tech stack that can compete with Big Tech to better serve users
  • The unique cultures emerging around crypto across different global hubs like Asia, Latin America, and Web3 enclaves

Buterin has been viewed as a central figure and guiding voice in the crypto space since first proposing his blockchain platform as a 19-year-old in 2013. Over 11 years later, Buterin reflects on how both the industry and his own role have profoundly changed during that time.

The Ethereum co-founder mentioned pointed out that when once-respected crypto projects like FTX were shut down due to their shady founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, he lost those whom he looked up to.

ā€œI realized, all at once, that most of the people I had looked up to as guiding lights of the crypto space that I could comfortably follow in the footsteps of back in 2014 were no more,ā€ Buterin mentioned in the post.

Buterin describes how these twists pushed him toward more intentional leadership and a revived vision for cryptocurrencyā€™s future. He advocates growing its scope beyond finance into a wider decentralized tech stack, tackling problems like identity, data rights, governance, and empowering individuals over institutions.
