Kabosu, the Iconic Shiba Inu Behind Dogecoin, Passes Away at 18

The cryptocurrency community is mourning the loss of Kabosu, the Shiba Inu, whose iconic meme became the face of Dogecoin (DOGE). Kabosu also inspired a generation of dog-themed meme coins.

According to a blog post by Kabosu’s owner, the cherished dog passed away peacefully on the morning of May 24, at an estimated age of 18.

Dogecoin official account pays tribute to Kabosu

Dogecoin’s official X account also paid tribute to the beloved dog, stating, “Today, Kabosu, our community’s shared friend and inspiration, peacefully passed, in the arms of her person. The impact this one dog has made across the world is immeasurable.”

Kabosu’s rise to fame began in the early 2010s, when a photo of a Shiba Inu with a quirky expression went viral. The meme’s popularity eventually led to the creation of Dogecoin in 2013, initially conceived as a joke currency.

However, Dogecoin quickly gained traction and became a cultural phenomenon, attracting a dedicated following and spawning a new era of memecoins.

Over the years, Dogecoin has grown to become the largest meme coin by market capitalization. The success of Dogecoin has also inspired the creation of several other major dog-themed meme coins, such as Shiba Inu (SHIB) and Floki (FLOKI).

The impact of Kabosu’s meme on the cryptocurrency landscape cannot be overstated. The viral image not only gave rise to Dogecoin but also helped to popularize the concept of meme coins.

To honor Kabosu’s memory, a farewell party will be held on Sunday, May 26th, at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita City, from 1pm to 4pm.
