Sam Altman’s Worldcoin quietly suspended its biometric signup program in India, Brazil, and France. The halt happened several months ago after overwhelming demand for free token signups snarled operations in India, multiple sources told Moneycontrol.

The shutdown aimed to address surging interest that created crowd control headaches and forced police interventions at Orb locations, according to mall staff and users. Worldcoin is now revamping plans to relaunch services better equipped to handle India’s massive scale.

Worldcoin relies on its Orb devices to scan user irises and create unique digital IDs tied to crypto wallets. The company offered about 25 free Worldcoin tokens per signup.

As crypto interest soared in India, thousands flooded Orb locations like malls when the devices initially launched, hoping to get free WLD. However, the enthusiasm quickly spiraled out of control.

Some mall executives said police had to be called amid customer crushes. With Worldcoin staff overwhelmed and hardware stretched thin, the company pulled Orb devices to rework its India strategy, sources said.

While suspending services tempers momentum, developers are now tweaking plans to support safe, orderly growth in one of cryptoā€™s most fervent hotspots.

The company recently dropped India from its global site. However, with eyes still on the billion-user prize, Worldcoin continues building bespoke infrastructure to harness the full potential of global crypto demand, especially in India.
